Taking a seat next to my husband Paul, 63, who was slouched on the sofa, I made him turn off the TV. ‘We need to talk,’ I told him, tearfully. ‘I don’t want our marriage to end.’

‘Neither do I, but you’re never here,’ he answered.

‘I didn’t retire to spend my days watching television!’ I snapped at him, starting to cry.

Me and Paul had moved from London to the beautiful village of Rustington in 2015, after he retired from train driving.

With a sandy beach just a stroll away from our front door, it was the idyllic retirement – but at 26st, Paul was miserable.
