Rolling down the metal access road to Meremere Dragway was a surprising moment. Arriving late for this year’s Father’s Day Drags, we found the spectator-parking paddock full to bursting and the stands and grass verges lining the strip buzzing with activity. Maybe it’s down to the lack of car events that we’ve had lately, but it really did feel like the biggest Father’s Day Drags in years, which is saying something, as it’s never been an event that has suffered from lack of attendance.
