WILD BUNCH THE RETURN PART 3

As we close in on one of the most eagerly anticipated events on the calendar, we not only take a look at another group of racers you will more than likely see but also at what exactly is planned on Sunday (race day) at the Kumeu Classic Car and Hot Rod Festival Wars at Masterton Motorplex over 4–5 January 2020.

With fields set after the Saturday teams’ race and qualifying, Sunday will shape up as what could be the first 16-car show of this nature in years. And just like reality TV’s Survivor, it will not necessarily be the fastest car that wins but the one who can outwit and outlast a field filled with wily veterans, young upstarts, and a few silent assassins thrown into the mix. To walk away as champ, you’re going to have to go through four tough elimination rounds to ultimately be the first one to lift the spectacular TRC Trophy (a trophy which will be put back up for grabs annually).

Another prize that will probably be just as coveted is the Century Batteries Best Burnout award, also set to be handed out on Sunday. And with an Optima battery and a bunch of other prizes up for grabs, you can be assured some will take this just as seriously as the racing itself. Don’t be surprised to see some that may be knocked out early heading back out on track to have a crack at this award alone. Either way, whoever wins it will have earned it.

Sunday will indeed be an action-packed day, with a grand parade set down for 10am, just before the first round set to go at 10.30. There will be a lolly scramble and freebies for the crowd planned during the parade, a merchandise tent set up in the pits, and each of the competitors will have a bunch of free hero cards for the kids (and big kids). So, between rounds, make sure you pop by, say hello, and grab an autograph.

The Wildbunch New Zealand Facebook page has all the info you’ll need leading into and during the event. If you can’t make it on the day, the page is also offering an opportunity to purchase some of the cool merchandise, so check it often for updates and links to our amazing sponsors who have made the return of an iconic class like Wild Bunch possible. With companies like Carters Tyres, Prowear, Mahia Service Centre, Whakatane Printers, SV Photos, Dragpixs, Century Batteries, Als
