As the street bustled with shoppers, the scent of cinnamon, mulled wine and hot chocolate filled the air.

The Christmas market in Strasbourg, in the north east of France, was one of the oldest in Europe and attracted thousands of people each year.
With its fairy lights, holly, tinsel and huge fir trees, it looked as pretty as the picture on a Christmas card.
