As has been covered recently in our VW History pieces, Prof. Dr. Ferdinand Porsche’s influence on the motorsport world can be traced back to the Auto Union race cars of the Third Reich, before he went out alone and launched the eponymous family business.

In September of 1938, during his work with the early state-run Volkswagen, Prof. Porsche suggested a sports car version of the KdF-Wagen, which was given the vehicle designation no. 114. The design was for a mid-engined (albeit rear-biased) layout, but the Type 114 never made it past the drawing
