Crock Of Gold barrels along with the same hectic passion as a Pogues number
ANOTHER ROUND According to Norwegian psychiatrist Finn Skårderud, humans have a blood alcohol level that is 0.05% too low, and we would function better if we raised it just a little. In Thomas Vinterberg’s Another Round, four male teachers in a Danish school decide that following Skårderud’s advice could enhance their performance and lift them out of mid-life inertia. The method works – then, spectacularly, it doesn’t, and the excruciating pleasure of Vinterberg’s film is in seeing how the process plays out both in the narrative and in the acting.
The performances are the film’s key selling point, and not only if you’re a fan of Mads Mikkelsen, who plays science teacher Martin – suddenly winning his students’ attention with his new-found dynamism and), Magnus Millang and Lars Ranthe as their cronies, and Maria Bonnevie as Martin’s mystified, then horrified wife.
