“IT’S RECORD OF THE YEAR”

“HOW MANY TIMES DOES AN 80-YEAR-OLD ARTIST MAKE A RECORD THAT’S ONE OF THE GREATS OF A LONG CAREER?”

Thanks for talking to us about  Rough & Rowdy Ways. It’s the record of the year! “Murder Most Foul”, particularly, to me is the song of the year.

Were you surprised, then, when Bob dropped a 17-minute track?

I’d just gotten home from a tour that’d been] and I saw the song come up online – my wife was painting late at night, we put it on the stereo, and it went on and on and on, and he’s naming off every record he’s ever bought… OK! But when it was over we felt compelled to play it again. I think we had it playing for about two hours straight – by the fourth or fifth listen it started really connected with both of us. It kind of washes over you, like being in a creek. By the end of the night we were both obsessed with it. It’s an amazing piece of work. All the things about it that at first were almost off-putting became really compelling. It’s amazing that after all these decades he can still be that guy who just nails a moment in time.

After a ramshackle 1988 debut, the Trux unpack their first great visionary work, a double album sprawl of densely layered noise-rock, driven by fractured rhythms, feral guitar riffs and vocals that nudge the pain barrier. 9/10 A first real dalliance
