HE FIRST TIME I ever saw Craig Cwm Silyn – the 2408 feet (734 metre) high point on the ‘Ridge of the Red Cairns’, now more commonly referred to as ‘the Nantlle Ridge’ – was on a weekend meet of the Mynydd Climbing Club held in Dyffryn Nantlle some time in the very early 1960s. I remember a Saturday spent rock-climbing on the Great Slab of Craig yr Ogof in Cwm Silyn – a venue to which I was to return many times over the following decades, and a Saturday evening in the Cwellyn Arms in Rhyd-Ddu.
