Deep Reach Clamps
Big clamps aren’t often needed, but when they’re called for, there’s really no substitute. And buying a pair of the same size F-style clamps you see here (8" shown) will set you back on the money you’re saving for that new router.
This low-cost alternative is a win-win in my book. It’s always fun to do a project that integrates hardware that’s out of the norm (barrel screws and a big ol’ Acme threaded rod). Plus, you can overcome some of the weak-points of store-bought clamp designs — a bar that the clamp jaw slips on. And that’s where we started.
A strong BAR
Tight-grained hard maple was the wood of choice for these clamps. It requires a little patience to work with, but it’ strength makes it worth the effort.
