    FOR SOME OF US, THE process of raising a car with a jack, positioning multiple jack stands properly, and then crawling under it to start wrenching ranks up there with getting a root canal, going to traffic court, and myriad other things we’d rather not do if we didn’t have to. Yet to keep our muscle cars in top form, we do it anyway.

    Not surprisingly, the automotive equipment industry is keenly aware of our apprehension and offers a variety of home-garage-friendly portable lifts. We’ll discuss a few examples here from companies like BendPak, MaxJax, QuickJack, Atlas Automotive Equipment, AMGO Hydraulics, APlusLift, and Harbor Freight Tools.

    GARAGE SPACE

    Though you may daydream about installing a full-rise lift and standing upright under your car while working on it like a real dealership mechanic, your home garage likely won’t offer the ceiling height to accommodate it, and items like the raised garage door, its frame, and the automatic garage door opener can also get in the way.
