Organic sheep and beef renewed efforts for growth
The future is looking brighter for organic beef and lamb production in New Zealand, thanks largely to the persistence of two organic farming pioneers.
STARTING IN THE SOUTH
Southland farmers Neville Parkinson and Paul Ruddenklau have so far lined up 45 certified organic sheep and beef farmers in the South Island to supply into a NZOM programme this season. Their finished animals are being processed at two certified organic facilities in the south with the product then sold directly by the New Zealand Organic Meats company to export markets.
The plan is to expand volume through the 2020–21 season by drawing in certified sheep and beef farmers in the North Island, and gathering cull cows from organic dairy producers nationwide. Neville and Paul have one certified meat processor in the North Island to support the programme.
