Two years after the demise of the RS2000, Escort RS fans got the news they’d longed for when Ford unveiled the RS1600i in October 1982.
But while many were overjoyed at the return of both a Rallye Sport Escort and Ford’s famed performance division, there were those that were aghast that the latest fast Ford put its power down via the front wheels rather than the rear. Of course, that was due to the new RS being based on the Mk3 Escort, but while it drove in a different way to its spiritual predecessor, the RS1600i was arguably superior in many ways.
