THE QUEEN’S GAMBIT

Intelligence, bordering on genius, is a gift that is both celebrated (Anya Taylor-Joy), it can also come at a huge cost. Abandoned and entrusted to an orphanage in Kentucky in the 1950s, Beth develops an astonishing talent for playing chess that is offset by the addiction to tranquilisers given to her by state authorities. As she’s haunted by her personal demons, which are fuelled by the cocktail of narcotics, she ultimately transforms into an impressively skilled and glamorous outcast, who is determined to conquer the rusted-on boundaries that exist in the male-centric world of competitive chess.
