MONDAY OCTOBER 19

DOG ALMIGHTY (TVNZ 2, 7.30PM, AND TUESDAY)

We have a proud history of prime-time pooch shows, , comes a new addition to the litter. marks the return of the radio-exiled Jono and Ben to telly. Their old comedy show included regular cameos by Ben’s Samoyed, Beau, a dog that makes up for what it lacked in training with its adorable fluffiness. Its unruly appearance in a dog obedience contest in one season may well have inspired this competition, offering $100,000 to the top dog. It’s not exactly Crufts, nor will there be any stroppy Romneys to pen. The dogs and their owners tackle challenges including rugby, piano playing and diving. The hosts have already made a joke about their career going to the dogs. But to turn down a sure-fire ratings hit like this, they would have been barking.
