The Oil Leak

MY LIFE had settled down into a simple routine. I worked at Mr Mohammed’s grocery store six days a week packing shelves and doing the shop’s books, and watched television in the evenings.

I kept my expenses tightly in check and took great care of my clothes, mending the worn parts as best I could and taking great care with regard to my health so that I didn't get sick.

I purchased most of my food, except vegetables, from Mr Mohammed, who was kind enough to give me a small employee discount.

By the end of each month I usually had a few rand left over which was always a great relief. But I knew that if I was ever faced with a large unexpected expense, I'd be unable to meet it.
