Hitting the big time
Turn 17 at the Assen TT Circuit in the Netherlands is one of those corners where top-flight racing cars seem to defy the laws of physics. It follows a super-high-speed section of the track where the driver has been hard on the throttle pedal for over a kilometre. Yet, in a BMW M4 DTM racecar, the long sweeping left-hander is taken flat out.
“That’s my favourite corner in the whole series,” says Sheldon van der Linde, the 21-year-old South African who is in his second season with the BMW RBM team. “You arrive there at 280 km/h and you don’t lift off. I tell you, when I got back to the pits after my first visit there, my eyes were wide open!”
