RACCOONS FROM THE CORN

It’s no secret that raccoons love corn. Sweet corn, grain corn or silage corn, it doesn’t matter. It doesn’t take much scouting to find the animals around corn. Catching those big, corn-fed critters isn’t always easy, however. With a smorgasbord of food available, it takes some special tactics to put the fur on the board.

My rural home sits on five acres. Bordered on the north by a river, the surrounding farmland was planted in corn this past year. My driveway runs for a quarter-mile along the river, with corn growing on the opposite side. As summer shifted into fall, I started noticing raccoon trails crossing the driveway. In addition, there were numerous trails from the corn into my yard.

To get a jump on trapping without setting the steel, I placed some trail cameras out. In addition to catching photos of fox squirrels going to the corn and my daughters goofing
