How to SAVE A LIFE

We’ve all watched dramatic lifesaving attempts on our TV screens, but what if it happened in real life? According to a survey by St John Ambulance, 40% of people in the UK would be worried about giving first aid.

Here, medical director at St John Ambulance Dr Lynn Thomas explains how to deal with common, life-threatening episodes.

WHEN THEY’RE BURNT

✣ First, get them away from the heat source, if safe to do so.

✣ Cool the burn with cool or lukewarm water for 20 minutes. Ice will only cause more pain.

✣ Remove clothes and jewellery in case of swelling,
