SOUTH AFRICA’S BIG WEEK OF HANDCUFFS

As the Hawks and other law enforcement agencies continue to swoop on alleged beneficiaries of corruption and circle political bigwigs, there is a growing backlash in the ANC against what some believe is a campaign aimed at influencing the balance of forces ahead of crucial conferences next year and in 2022.

City Press has learnt that among those in the crosshairs of the Hawks and the National Prosecuting Authorarity (NPA) are a senior leader of the ANC, a former Cabinet minister, and several officials and businesspeople.

In a week of high drama, the Hawks pounced on several high-profile individuals involved in corruption-related activities. They included current and former government officials and businesspeople who were allegedly involved in a dodgy R255 million asbestos eradication project in the Free State in which only R21 million was spent
