YB SURVIVAL GUIDE

COOLING FANS

THE PROBLEM

There’s a couple of areas to be aware of with Cosworth cooling fans: first, check the fans themselves haven’t seized up. If they have, order some replacements (might as well opt for an upgrade from Pro Alloy or Airtec) before you do anything else – an overheating Cossie is a Pandora’s Box of problems waiting to happen.

But it might not just be the fans themselves that are at risk. The wiring for the cooling fans is based on general Sierra stuff, but with the beefy twin fans required to keep the YB cool after a thrash, the standard Sierra wiring struggles to cope. The result is a wiring circuit that’s simply inadequate for such a high-current system, and over time it burns out to leave a molten mess in the fuse box.

THE CURE

For a burnt-out circuit you’ll need to replace the damaged wiring and fuse box, which can be costly. To prevent it happening again, add a twin fused spur direct from the battery to give each fan its own
