Mountains, wetlands, birds… There are many reasons to visit Wakkerstroom in Mpumalanga, but for the Smit couple, owners of the Pot & Gieter Guesthouse, the Afrikaans film Vrou Soek Boer was the deciding factor.

“The film was set in town,” says Lizet Smit (pictured below, far left). “We watched it and I told my husband JJ that I had to move to Wakkerstroom – it looked idyllic.”

Idyllic is exactly the right word. There are no traffic lights
