Many a ‘truth’ is conditional, subject to change without notice. In 1930s Britain and in the US, a fair number of educated young idealists made common cause with the Russian revolution, and hoped to see a fairer society emerge from that experiment. Their support for it was then sorely tried when the Molotov-Ribbentrop agreement was made public and Poland was divided. True believers then had the task of readjusting their minds to somehow find moral value in that alliance
