‘I want to give people a better experience of cycling’
THE IDEA
From my 20s to early 30s, I worked as a bike shop mechanic in Manchester. It was run as a workers’ cooperative and I had the experience of being both an employee and employer. I thought that would be my life, but my mum thought I’d make a great occupational therapist (OT). So, aged 35, I took an OT degree, qualifying three years later. I worked in the spinal injury unit at Sheffield Hospital, teaching people who were new to being in a wheelchair how to manage daily tasks. I loved it but, in the end, I missed working with my hands. I got a job for Islabikes, the children’s bike specialists, where I found my OT training was invaluable in fitting
