SPICE IT UP
Peer inside the delicate purple flower of and you’ll see three orange-red stigma that are almost worth their weight in gold. These are saffron strands – highly fragrant and expensive. Saffron crocuses are easy to grow but you need around 50 plants to get a teaspoon of spice! Plant corms in autumn, around 15cm deep and 10-15cm apart. When they flower (Oct/ Nov), extract strands with tweezers.
