When Napoleon imposed an onerous salt tax, he impoverished, or salt workers, took to creating dolls that were dressed in local costumes created from shells and mica. Although the post-war fashion for bathing and romantic coastal scenery brought visitors to buy them, many were snapped up by merchants to sell more expensively elsewhere. A couple of these sold at Lyon & Turnbull for £1,188.
