THIS autumn is remarkably fecund, with boughs breaking under the weight of fruit. Old trees in orchards, long considered past it, are, this year, laden with pears. Quince, apples and plums in profusion—although, oddly enough, not a medlar to be seen. The squirrels, as always, have had the nuts and, by the look of the carpet of shells under the trees,
