Deer at dawn
Autumn is the best time to see muntjac deer. Sometimes known as barking deer because of their characteristic dog-like call, they’re easier to spot as the vegetation cover grows thinner. These shy creatures can be seen in woodland, parkland and increasingly in overgrown urban garden areas across England, with a smaller population in Wales. They’re most active at dawn and dusk – for a great chance of a sighting, visit Hatfield Forest in Hertfordshire, also home to fallow deer. Visit nationaltrust.org.uk/hatfield-forest
