POETRY IS ABOUT TELLING STORIES TO THE WORLD
Poetry is subjective. It’s not just about words, but also about having the ability to tell a story in a way that enables the reader to visualise the pictures the poem paints. This is how poet Emmah Mabye expresses herself, and she describes poetry thus: “It’s when words are visually inviting, [painting] a picture of what words on a paper are. It’s when the tapestry of what is written makes you feel like you are there, within what has been written about.”
City Press speaks to Mabye (34) at her home in Midrand about the outlet that poetry offers her. Her words address societal issues such as discrimination, sexism, segregation and gender-based violence.
