Craig Baird won the first of his three New Zealand Grand Prix (NZGP) events in 1991 at Pukekohe, driving a Toyota-powered Swift DB-4. The next two came in successive years, both at Manfeild and each time in Reynard’s Atlantic car. This meant that Craig had won our biggest race three times in a row by the time he was 22. I ask whether one of them has any greater memory for him than the others.

“The biggest memory I have was getting the trophy home and seeing all the names. Yes, it’s special but at the time it didn’t really sink in — just wanted to get on and win the next race — but it’s much more so now,” he says. Craig concedes that one thing winning the NZGP did was to make him
