I thought that the article by Laura McInerney, in particular the observation that ‘between 1985 and 1996 not a single British commemorative stamp (other than Vivien Leigh) featured a non-royal real woman’ deserved a considered response to add to the brief commentary by the editor.

Royal Mail’s special stamps do, from time to time, celebrate the achievements of pioneers, leaders and celebrities but there is no requirement, legal or other, for them to do so. A review of Royal Mail’s issues between 1985 and 1996 reveals a diverse range of subjects, which I have broadly categorised as follows: Natural World (14 sets); Christmas (11); Transport (6); Royal Family (8); Public or National Institutions (11); Writers and Poets (6); Sport (7); Astronomy (3); Ware and Peace (4); Historical Events (6); Music (2); Greetings (8); Industry (3); Scientific Invention (6); Art (3); Others (12).
