XAVIER SALOMON, chief curator at the Frick Collection in New York, believes the best way to appreciate Van Dyck’s full-length portrait of Sir John Suckling is with a Pink Gin—one part Plymouth gin and a dash of Angostura bitters. For Rembrandt’s Polish Rider, he suggests a Szarlotka—a horse kick of vodka, cider, and a pinch of ground cinnamon. And nothing goes more suavely with Velázquez’s King Philip IV of Spain than a Fiftififti—equal measures of chilled, dry Fino and sweet sherry.
