CELEBRATED SETS

Having taken over the fractious province in 1878, the Austrians sought to stem the tide of Serb and Croat nationalism by creating a Bosnian identity and also by codifying laws, modernising institutions and investing in new industries and infrastructure: Sarajevo became the first town in the region to have an electric tram. Stamps could help to define this new identity, and so the grim-looking military post stamps used from 1879 would be replaced by a set to be proud of, scenic and historical attractions combined with the last word in design and production.
