POSTCARDS

On the road

Something you just can’t get when buying on the internet, writes Richard Stenlake, is the serendipity of going through a box of cheapie postcards or covers at a fair looking for the cards and postmarks that to the untrained eye look like nothing. It’s a low-cost means of entry to becoming a small-time dealer or if you are a magpie collector with multiple interests it’s paradise.

Cheapie boxes start from 20p a card and dealers will often give extra discounts for bulk purchases. I have built several collections this way – the Giants Causeway, Vesuvius, and downtown Manhattan – big tourist attractions that I visited on my holidays. The dearest card in my Giants Causeway album (yes I’ve filled quite a lot of pages) cost me £2 but most were under 50p and the whole lot have barely cost me £20.
