LANDING SHIPS

Two American amphibian Landing Ships involved in Exercise Tiger rehearsals off Slapton Sands in Devon just weeks before D-Day have been protected by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport on the advice of Historic England.

Exercise Tiger was a series of D-Day rehearsals aimed at preparing American and British troops for the Allied invasion of Normandy using the American Landing Ships (LSTs). These were designed for amphibious armoured infantry assaults and had a bow door to allow trucks and tanks to drive straight onto the beach.
