MAKING PLATES

YOU WILL NEED:

The bisque plate ring made in issue 41

Clay of choice – both earthenware or stoneware have been used in the examples shown

Plastic sheet, rolling pin, 5mm roller guides

Soft kidney

Glazes of choice – each technique will detail the exact glazes used if you want to replicate them

Fan-type brush and fine liner for glaze application

Slip/glaze trailing bulb

BEFORE YOU BEGIN:

Even though the plate mould is a given size, you can make plates in different dimensions by simply narrowing or widening the rim. The central area will always be the same, of course. If you wanted to make much smaller plates (tea plates, for example), you would be best advised to make a smaller ring.

Sit your plate ring on a wooden batt of the same size.

Prepare a block of clay large enough to accommodate the size of plate you want to make.
