During the 1970s Roy paid a number of visits to Yorkshire, often accompanied by Sandy Ross to photograph some interesting surviving operations

Roy had a particular interest in paddle steamers and made two visits to Hull in 1973 and 1976 to photograph the steamers which at that time still plied the Humber Estuary as the last coal-burning paddle steamers operating a regular service
