That’s the view of Warren Gatland, the man tasked with taking the best rugby players in Britain and Ireland to South Africa next summer with the goal of beating the reigning world champions and securing a Test series win in the country for the first time in 24 years.

This will be Gatland’s fourth Lions tour, having been an assistant to Sir Ian McGeechan in South Africa in 2009 and the head coach in both 2013 (Australia) and 2017 (New Zealand). Yes, Gatland’s selection – both in terms of players and coaches – will be crucial to how the Lions fare against the Springboks, but he also recognises the importance of the travelling supporters.
