Up the GARDEN PATH

As the gardening year nears its conclusion and fleeting flowers no longer attract all the attention, the permanent structure of a garden is gradually laid bare. Without the distraction of flowers and foliage, the outlines of paths and patios, lawns and borders are unveiled and any failings made clear. There is now a window of opportunity, before the days shorten much further, to review your layout, and consider carrying out a few minor tweaks or even, if your budget allows, a revamp of the hard landscaping.

Remember, though, that a garden’s thoroughfares cannot be considered in isolation, but within the context of the entire garden, and the finest strike a balance between function and design. Walkways are unavoidable, whether linking a back door to different spaces, or leading from street to front door. Some are practical, providing a route to essential areas such as sheds, compost heaps or bins, while others are more decorative, blending into the planting, leading to alluring vistas or extending an invitation to explore further.
