The percussion cap revolutionised small arms development. It is hard to think that this tiny capsule of pressure-sensitive explosive should have had such a far-reaching effect. Originally conceived as an improved ignition system, the percussion cap made repeating firearms a reality and was an integral part of the self-contained metallic cartridge that enabled automatic fire to be developed.
