The .45 ACP has been with us for more than a century. Unlike many other rounds that have gone through substantial improvements over time, the tried-and-true original 230-grain FMJ is still fairly hard to beat in terms of real-world performance.
When it comes to the modern variations of this cartridge, almost all of them still operate in roughly the same performance window as the traditional load, around 800 to 1,000 fps; in short, most .45 ACP ammo is more similar than it is different. When it comes to suppressing this American classic, there are a few things you should know.
MASS EFFECT
The .45 ACP is a low-pressure, high-efficiency cartridge. Given its size, it launches a very heavy bullet at excellent velocity without much powder at all. In fact, although it’s larger and heavier, the .45 ACP uses typically the same powder charge as most 9mm loads. Because of this efficiency, you can get an incredible degree of performance at all handgun distances while enjoying a very high service life for your pistol, and unique properties when it comes to the use of suppressors. Because of its bore diameter, mass and a wide range of suitable projectiles, the .45 ACP is arguably the most flexible automatic pistol cartridge offered today in terms of end use.
