was interested to read in your ‘Déja Vu’ feature (, September) how composers have often, written in 1889, over 50 years ahead of Messiaen and his piece for the Paris Conservatoire flute competition in 1952. Beach was also captivated by a voluble thrush (at the MacDowell Colony in New Hampshire) – and out of this came and (Op. 11 Nos 1 & 2, 1921), cleverly conjuring birdsong on the piano. A little later, her (Op. 128 No. 3, 1932) sparkles like shimmering wings.
