On 25 July 1943, soon after the Allied landing in Sicily, Mussolini and his Fascist regime were swept from power. It was not the anti-Fascist resistance but the Italian political establishment that pulled the plug on Il Duce. The new government, under Marshal Badoglio, officially maintained ties with Nazi Germany, fearing reprisals.
