1 Great Lakes Writers Festival

Sponsored by the writing program at Lakeland University, this “celebration of writing” provides seasoned and emerging writers the opportunity to talk with peers, discuss their work, and learn from pros through workshops. Ed. note: The date of this conference was changed just prior to the publication of this issue.

November 4–5, 2021. Lakeland University, Sheboygan, Wis. Free. There is enough space for participants to maintain social distancing. Therefore, “This event is perfect for creative writers—whether they’re residents or visitors to the area, college students, or high school students,” says festival coordinator Karl Elder. Day two consists partially of programming aimed at high school students and their teachers, although all participants are welcome to attend readings and an open mic that morning. Past presenters include Mark Strand, W.P. Kinsella, Billy Collins, Larry Watson, A.E. Stallings, Emily Ruskovich, Sapphire (Ramona Loft on), Michael Martone, Christian Wiman, and Henry S. Taylor. 200. Featured writers include novelist Ryan Ireland and poet Cathryn Cofell. Highly esteemed presenters join the Lakeland community for conversations about their art and craft through readings and workshops. There are contests in poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction in two categories: (1) adults and college students and (2) high school students. Contests are judged by the staff of literary magazine. Bookworm Gardens is a whimsical botanical garden with community events and sections inspired by popular children’s books. They offer an immersive outdoor education experience for both the young and young at heart. .
