THE Tyne & Wear Metro has notched up 40 years of operation, the first section from Haymarket to Tynemouth via Benton opening on August 11, 1980.
Often overlooked by enthusiasts as it quietly goes about its routine business connecting Tyneside, Newcastle and Sunderland, the network is full of history and interest - not least the unique Metrocars, which are the twice-refurbished originals and so date back to the late-1970s.
