Land reform, citizenship and social justice

The recent state-ordered evictions in the middle of a global pandemic and a harsh winter remind South Africans about the unanswered land question. These forced removals exacerbate longstanding race, class and gender socioeconomic inequalities highlighted by the societal impact of Covid-19. Black working-class citizens – excluded from the economy and with minimal access to public goods such as land – are at the receiving end of these evictions.
