Almost 200 years ago, Langalibalele and his amaHlubi defied authority – first that of amaZulu and later of the British. The concept of the land belonging to a colonial government and subject to colonial law was foreign to Langalibalele and his people. After all, was he not the leader of amaHlubi? Why should his people work for the colonial government, building roads for it without pay when they could be using their time to further the interests of their tribe?
