    BRAND SA TRIED TO PAY FOR FORMER CEO’S SILENCE

    Brand SA allegedly wanted to offer an “inducement” payment of close to R1 million to its former chief executive officer (CEO) Kingsley Makhubela in a handshake deal aimed at “silencing” him about allegations against its senior executives and board members.

    These revelations, City Press understands, are contained in a draft “handshake deal” that came to light after Minister in the Presidency Jackson Mthembu, who also acts as the executive authority at the entity entrusted with promoting South Africa’s image, rejected the board’s proposal to fire Makhubela.

    Brand SA has been engaged in a protracted battle with Makhubela, who was placed on special leave in April 2018 following “spurious allegations” on its whistle-blower hotline, in what he described as an
