‘I haven’t done enough’

KICK OFF: How much has the coronavirus affected you personally?

Sphelele Mkhulise: It has affected me massively because it happened at a time when the progress that I was making in my football was evident. When we go back to the field, I will have to find ways of starting again and trying to find a way of catching up with what I had already been doing to bring back my form. But I am grateful that we have all been safe at home and following all the regulations from the authorities. The team gave us a programme to follow so every morning we are training and at least able to keep busy. My daily life hasn’t been affected much because I only focus on football. I miss football.

Not much is known about your background and how you ended up in the Sundowns development…

I was born in Caluza near Pietermaritzburg and started out at Esigodini Primary School, from where I went to Edendale Community Secondary. With football I started playing for Experience back home in Caluza and then went to Maritzburg Celtic, from where I joined the Maritzburg United development. But after it was closed, I went to Umgungundlovu Academy. While at Umgungundlovu, a Pietermaritzburg squad was selected to go and play in the Under-15 FNB Lucas Radebe Festival in 2011, which was played at UJ’s
