HOUSE HISTORY
As anyone who has enjoyed the first two series of BBC Two’s A House Through Time will know, tracing the history of a house is as much about the people and place as the building. This means that many of the documents used, such as census records, will already be familiar to family historians and can easily be found online – often for free.
However, to really build up a picture of your house’s history you will probably need to visit your local record office. Discovery, the online catalogue of The National Archives (TNA) in Kew, will list the office’s website, address and contact details: discovery.nationalarchives.gov. uk/find-an-archive.
Some records, including some land records, wills and maps, may be held in national collections at TNA (), the National Library of Wales () and the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (). However, an increasing number are now available), Findmypast () and TheGenealogist (), as well as the free FamilySearch ().
