During the Second World War millions of women were mobilised with 90 per cent of single, able-bodied women between the ages of 18 and 40 engaged in some form of work or National Service. They carried out such vital roles as mechanics, engineers, munitions workers, air-raid wardens, nurses, spies, and bus, fire engine and ambulance drivers.
